Stop Chasing Materialism: Seek God First

There is a deep deception moving throughout this present world system where people are being taught, both directly and indirectly, to chase things—material gain, status, recognition, influence, and even emotional experiences—while neglecting the very thing their soul truly needs: the divine, holy presence of the Spirit of God actively dwelling and operating within their lives. Many are busy pursuing what they believe will fulfill them, yet they remain empty, restless, and spiritually dry because they have not come into alignment with the true source of life, which is found only in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Word of God makes this truth plain, yet it is often overlooked. Jesus Himself said, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). The order here is critical. The Kingdom of God and His righteousness are not to be secondary pursuits—they are to be first. Yet in this present age, many have reversed this order, seeking “things” first and hoping God will follow, when in truth, it is the presence of God that produces everything else that is needed.

There is nothing in this world that can substitute for the presence of God. Not success, not wealth, not relationships, and not even religious activity. A person can be surrounded by outward blessings and still be inwardly barren without the Spirit of God actively working within them. This is why the scripture declares, “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). This question pierces through the illusion of worldly pursuit and brings us back to the eternal reality—our soul’s greatest need is not things, but God Himself.

True life begins when a person comes into a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ, not just in word, but in Spirit and in truth. It is through this relationship that we gain access to the supernatural presence of God. Jesus said, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). This means that access to God is not based on outward form, but on inward transformation and sincere communion with Him. The presence of God is not something to be observed from a distance—it is something to be entered into, experienced, and lived in daily.

The promise of this divine presence was made clear when Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit, saying, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever” (John 14:16). This is not a temporary visitation, but a continual indwelling. When the Spirit of God is active in a person’s life, He brings guidance, conviction, peace, power, and revelation. Without Him, a person may have knowledge, but they lack life. As it is written, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing” (John 6:63).

Many are chasing manifestations without first cultivating the presence. They desire the supernatural, but they neglect the One who makes the supernatural possible. The truth is, the supernatural presence of the Lord Jesus Christ is not accessed through striving for things, but through surrendering to Him. The scripture tells us, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you” (James 4:8). This is an invitation into intimacy, into closeness, into a life where God is not distant, but near, active, and real.

The Spirit of God does not dwell in places driven by worldly ambition, but in hearts that are yielded and surrendered. “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16). This is a profound truth—God desires to live within us, to move through us, and to reveal Himself in and through our lives. But this requires a turning away from chasing the temporary and a turning toward embracing the eternal.

When a person truly begins to hunger for the presence of God, their desires begin to change. The things of this world lose their grip, and a deeper longing emerges—a longing for righteousness, for truth, for communion with God. Jesus spoke of this hunger when He said, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). This filling is not with material things, but with the very presence and power of God Himself.

Access to the supernatural presence of the Lord Jesus Christ is not reserved for a select few—it is available to all who are willing to come to Him with a sincere heart. Through repentance, faith, and continual surrender, a person opens their life to the indwelling Spirit of God. As it is written, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19). That “refreshing” is what so many are searching for in other places, yet it is only found in Him.

Therefore, the call is clear: stop chasing things that cannot satisfy and begin to pursue the presence of the living God. For in His presence, there is fullness of joy, purpose, direction, and life everlasting. “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Psalm 16:11). This is the portion of those who turn away from the empty pursuits of this world and choose instead to dwell in the supernatural presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.
