Submission to authorities is important because it reveals the order of the Lord God in the earth realm. Every child of God is encouraged to live in submission to earthly authority so that their lives become a visible witness of what the Lord God has instituted through human governance. The Word of God clearly teaches that authority is not random, but allowed and structured by God for the benefit, stability, and protection of humanity. 1 Peter 2:13–17 calls believers to “submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake,” whether to kings or governors, because such authority exists to punish wrongdoing and praise those who do right. This instruction is not rooted in human control, but in divine order.
The Lord God is a God of order, not confusion. From the very beginning, His creation reflected structure, boundaries, and purpose. When humanity walks in submission to lawful authority, they mirror the order that flows from heaven itself. Romans 13:1–2 declares, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” This does not mean every authority acts righteously at all times, but it affirms that the concept of governance itself is established by God. Therefore, resisting lawful order without cause becomes resistance against a structure God allowed for societal stability.
Submission also demonstrates humility and trust in God’s sovereignty. The believer understands that God ultimately rules above all earthly leaders. When one submits in righteousness, they are not surrendering to man, but honoring God’s divine arrangement. Titus 3:1 instructs believers “to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work.” This readiness to do good under authority becomes a testimony to the transforming power of the Spirit of God working within His people.
Apart from ruling authority, things quickly fall into disorder. Humanity’s sinful nature, left unchecked, produces chaos, injustice, and harm. The Lord God, knowing the condition of fallen humanity, established structures that restrain evil and promote good. Ecclesiastes 8:11 warns that when judgment is not executed quickly, the hearts of people are fully set to do evil. Authority serves as a restraint against lawlessness and provides accountability within society. This is part of God’s mercy toward humanity, preserving communities from descending into destructive disorder.
Even Jesus Christ Himself demonstrated submission to earthly authority while remaining fully obedient to the Father. He instructed to render to governing powers what belongs to them, saying, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s” in Matthew 22:21. This shows that honoring authority does not replace devotion to God, but rather coexists with it in proper balance. Christ also submitted during His trial, recognizing that authority existed only because it was permitted from above, as He told Pilate in John 19:11, “Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above.”
Submission to authority also protects the testimony of believers before the world. When followers of Christ live respectfully and peacefully within lawful order, their conduct silences false accusations. 1 Peter 2:15 explains that it is the will of God “that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.” A submitted life becomes a living witness of God’s wisdom, patience, and righteousness operating within human society.
Furthermore, the Word of God emphasizes that obedience to authority should always align with obedience to God. When earthly commands contradict God’s truth, believers must stand with the Lord. The apostles demonstrated this in Acts 5:29, declaring, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” This balance shows that submission is not blind compliance, but a Spirit-led posture that honors God first while respecting earthly structures whenever possible.
When believers walk in submission, they promote peace, stability, and unity. 1 Timothy 2:1–2 encourages prayer for kings and all who are in authority so that people may live “a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” Prayer for leadership reflects recognition that God works through governance to maintain order in the earth. The submitted believer does not resist structure but intercedes for it, trusting God to guide leaders and restrain injustice.
Therefore, submission to earthly authority reflects the divine order of God the Creator. It demonstrates humility, promotes peace, restrains evil, and preserves testimony. Without such ruling authority, disorder would prevail, and humanity would follow the impulses of the sinful nature. But through God’s wisdom, governance exists to benefit society and provide structure within a fallen world. When the children of God live in respectful submission, they reveal heaven’s order operating within the earth, showing that the Lord God remains sovereign over all human authority and that His Word brings stability, righteousness, and peace to humanity.
